Installing country kitchen islands in a kitchen with antique or rustic-looking wood surfaces takes planning. You want the island to fit the décor. You want it to look as if it’s been around for a while. You can design an island to look more expensive than it is. For example, install a countertop made of granite tile pieces versus real granite. Or you can make the top from butcher block wood materials or use brick or stone for the base of the island. Ideally, design the island to appear that several generations have used it.

Use a measuring tape or yardstick to define how much space you will have for the island. Make it fit with other appliances and countertops. You don’t want it to stand out too much. It should look as if it’s always been part of the kitchen. Whether you’re tall or short, design the island to be the right height for you. If there are two cooks in the house, you might create two spaces for working at different heights.

Decide if you want to have seating at the country kitchen islands. You will need to make it at least 6 feet long to include stools on both sides or around one end. The island can be perfectly square or a long rectangle. Design the top with both counter space and a chopping block area made of wood. Use rustic wood for the sides of the island. It can be a freestanding unit attached to the floor. Or it can be constructed on wheels or casters for use on different sides of the kitchen.

Include expensive materials for the construction of the island if your budget allows. A countertop made of granite tiles with matching grout is a good choice. Or use man-made countertop materials in earth tone colors with extreme durability features. It’s fairly expensive to build any type of kitchen island, so you want it to last for a long time.

Build a metal pot rack above the island area if it will be stationary. It’s charming to hang pots and cooking utensils above the island, but it’s also practical for finding items quickly to create a meal. You can find metal racks at any large home-building store. You can paint a metal rack to match the hardware on your kitchen island. Use rustic hardware that is oversized for hinges and drawer pulls.

Make sure the country kitchen islands has the same tone of wood as the rest of the kitchen. You don’t want it to look constructed long after the rest of the kitchen was built. You want it to appear as if it were installed with the rest of the cabinets. If the top of your island has limited work space, you can install a bar for eating made of rustic wood around the outside perimeter of the island. Attach a bar 12 inches wide about 6 inches down from the top of the island to accommodate four to six stools. Use waterproofing material on the top of the eating counter space made of wood. You want to wipe up spills without harming the wood.
